Movie Review – Scene Analysis

The suicide scene in “A star is Born” was an emotional one, we watch Jack exit his car, hardly able to walk, as he appeared to have been drinking or taken some type of drug. He silently breaks the viewers’ hearts. Jack slowly walks into his garage, holding a belt, he locates a cabinet to stand on and walks back to open the garage door. His face is shown, filled with emotion, and we can infer that he is trying to end his life. You can really tell the amount of pain Jack truly is experiencing, as the camera zooms in and stays on his face for quite some time. Down comes the garage door and the camera cuts to a performance where Ally, his wife, is singing the line, “Why did you do that?” Ally even shouts Jack out during her performance of the song Shallow. The scene cuts back to the garage where the dog is sitting forlornly outside the closed door waiting for his owner. These last few minutes of this scene are an extraordinarily graphic depiction of suicide, as we see flashing red and blue lights which leave the viewer to believe are first responders. The difference between the two scenes are quite dramatic. The arena where Ally is performing presents an upbeat electric feel, in contrast to the garage scene which depicts darkness and has an ominous feel.
